Fox in Socks by Dr Seuss

Do you know what they call it when Tweetle Beetles battle with paddles in a puddle in a bottle?

If the answer is no then you need to read Fox in Socks by Dr Seuss for the answer to this silly tongue-twister and many more funny rhymes.

Fox in Socks was written and illustrated by Dr Seuss and published in 1965. The book is aimed at helping young children to read but its funny tongue-twisters make it an ideal book for children and adults to read together.

Every aspect of Fox in Socks is a delight to readers; the illustrations, the rhymes, the silly situations and the two main characters - here I will say a little about all these facets of the book.

Tongue-twisting Rhymes

Fox in Socks is all about the ever-increasingly difficult tongue-twisters that Fox sets for his friend, Mr Knox. Starting with simple rhymes, they get harder, more convoluted and complex throughout the book.

Although there is no real story to Fox in Socks, the main character introduces his friend and readers to a Goo Goose chewing Blue Goo and games such as quick chick brick stack as well as teaching readers about Sue sewing slow Joe Crows clothes!

Quite simply, this is a book which is nothing but fun in its text even if there is no real story to it; Fox in Socks is a lot of fun to read.

The Illustrations

As with all Dr Seuss books, the illustrations in Fox in Socks are exquisite. The cheeky Fox is as cute a protagonist as could ever exist and the suffering of Mr Knox as the book progresses and the rhymes get too much for him is wonderfully depicted.

Typically with Dr Seuss's illustrations, there are weird scenes, surreal colours and vivid expressions for readers to enjoy. Simply some of the best Dr Seuss art that exists.

Silly Situations

Whilst the illustrations and rhymes are fun, they would be nowhere near as entertaining if they described every day situations. Instead they describe utterly stupid things such as  bricks in bed, a crow sewing, a poodle eating noodles and an insect fight within a puddle in a bottle. These ultra-imaginative situations are what makes readers really chuckle and is one of the author's trademarks.

Fox in Socks & Mr Knox

The two main characters in the book are the Fox in Socks and his friend Mr Knox. Whilst Fox is playful and loves to say silly rhymes, Mr Knox is less enthusiastic about events and he loses his patience towards the end of the book.

The two characters are wonderful together, Fox being reminiscent of a reluctant adult and Fox being the characterization of childish playfulness.

These two characters are perfect foils for each other, even if they do have something of a disagreement at the end!
